1999 Info Right From The (Ford) Horses Mouth

November 2, 2012 about Ford F-150

When I purchased my 1999 F150 (V8, extended cab) I worked for the Ford Corp. I got it from a reliable source (dealer mechanic and then again later from Ford manufacturer rep) that they set the warning light to come on those vehicles when approx 5 gallons left in tank. I average 14 mpg with the truck so simple math.

5 gls x 14mpg = 70 miles left in tank. For safety, in my mind, I round down to an even 50 miles. Have NEVER run out, after 13 years and 220,000 miles. :)

I have a 1997 F 150 with the 5.4 V8. I have only seen the low fuel light 3 or 4 times in the 26 years I have had this truck. I have always considered between 1/8 and 1/4 tank as empty, so as to avoid running out. To be honest anything below the 1/4 and I start to get a little concerned. When I see the low fuel light on a mild panic starts. Knowing now, I likely still have 5 Gals., left in the tank, I can maybe avoid that mild panic from ever starting. With that said, unlikely I will pass the next gas station without a stop!
