I used to have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. I would NOT recommend regularly running this car down to the gas light, as I did with mine, because eventually your fuel pump will go, and that's a $300+ repair.
I now have a 2003 Corolla, and I pretty regularly run it low (hey, gas is currently about $3.65/gal here in Chicago) and I've never had the fuel pump go on me. Hooray for Japanese manufacturing (although, um, mine was made in Ontario, Canada)! Anyway, in my experience, when I've run the tank to the light and filled her full, it's 11 gallons worth of gas. Doing the math with my 13 gallon capacity tank, that's 2 gallons of gas left. At 38mpg highway (25mpg city, in my experience), I would have anywhere from 50-70 miles left. So there you go.

yeah, japanese, canadian, or what have you - sure, it will run - until the pump has enough. i prefer to fill up perhaps more often, but at least i won't get stuck on a highway (happened to me, that was no fun) and facing repair bill and being car-less for a few days. i say GOOD LUCK!
I've been driving corola's for years and never had any problems with the gas pump. I often run it on red, so to speak, and have never filled it more than half way! There's no point driving all that extra weight around, unless of course, you're driving hundreds of miles accross the desert or something! :)
Nope, Japanese cars tend to have more durable fuel pumps, plain and simple. This is provable via repair statistics.
3.65 a gallon?? I need to live where you are...in Canada its averaging about 5.85 a gallon!!!!
